BMW MOA National Rally in Lebanon, TN - June 13-16
Author Last Post
Good to get some more tips, thanks Jerry! I am getting excited about it. Have my trip planned up the Natchez Trace, even though there is talk of it being slow going. I have researched and acquired some decent Moto-camping gear and am looking forward to it! It seems the weather is going to be decent too! Well, we'll see how that turns out. See y'all soon. Cliff
One of the guys emailed me some questions about traveling to the rally as a 'newbie' or 'rookie'. I thought I would post my answers here in the forum for everyone to see and maybe add their own experience, wisdom, and perspective. I think there are a lot of other people who are not that experienced at traveling and camping on a bike who would like to read about these kinds of topics.

"I ride because it frees my mind from the tyranny of petty things."

"A few questions regarding a long group trip to a large rally (neither of which I have done before):

1 - How hard is it to get a shower at the rally?

The shower facilities are usually pretty awesome. There may be some fixed shower facilities in the fairgrounds but they always bring in several commercial shower trailers. They are nice. Clean, plenty of hot water, quick and efficient. One tip: to avoid the sometimes long lines take a shower when everyone else is busy. Dinnertime, afternoon, late at night, or really early in the morning. Bring your own soap, shampoo, and towel.

2 - How would we do food on the trip and at the rally?  Stop and eat?  Food trucks at the rally?  Or pack and cook?

On the trip you usually just stop along the way at wherever. My personal preference is to stop in small towns and find the local cafes, and try to avoid the large chains and franchises. At the rally there are many food vendors but be forewarned they are more expensive than outside the grounds. They are selling food AND convenience. I'm talking around $8-10 for a meal of a burger, hotdog, Mexican or Chinese plate, BBQ, etc.

3 - Jerry - what do you mean by "10 spots"?  Is there a limited number of people allowed as the club group?

A few months ago I asked the rally club camping coordinator for 10 spots since I didn't know who was coming. I have since upped that to 15, but not everyone will stay with the group in the club camping area. That will give us a little more room. It's nice to have a way to stay together, otherwise with people arriving at different times it is hard to find each other and harder to find space together. You will see on Friday afternoon and Saturday when most of the people arrive it will be a sea of tents.

4 - Is there a need for cash outside of an emergency fund?  Do the vendors take credit cards?

No, credit cards are ubiquitous. It's always smart to have some cash but you can live on a credit card almost exclusively.

5 - Are rally goers typically respectful of others' things?  Can I leave my GPS etc., in my tent while walking the rally without too much concern?

Absolutely! You can leave everything and anything in your tent or on your bike. Common sense says keep valuables out of sight but I have never heard of anyone losing anything to theft. You will be surrounded by older, experienced motorcycle travelers who have been camping and traveling for many years. The camaraderie is one of the best aspects of coming to the rally every year!

6 - Are there laundry facilities?  That could make it possible to pack less.  If that is available, is it a hassle?

Probably but I'm not sure. Might have to go outside of the grounds somewhere. For a week-long trip you shouldn't have to do much laundry. Bring a small packet of liquid detergent or put some powder in a small baggie from home. I wear synthetic, quick dry types of clothes that I can wash in a sink somewhere and dry overnight.

7 - Will there be any kind of trip planning meeting beforehand? (route, reservations, etc.)

No. Everyone pretty much travels on their own. It's nice to keep in touch and know when people arrive but other than that not much coordination. Riding a motorcycle is inherently a solo sport. While it's nice to travel with a friend or two, groups are harder to manage along the way (gas stations, restaurants, camp spots). Generally, smaller is better. IMHO.

Hello, add Cliff Donald to the list of attendees. As long as nothing blows up at work I should be able to go. I have taken off the 13th-14th and 17th-18th. Looking forward to riding with the group and will plan for breaking trips up over two days there/to. Would also prefer a hotel room over camping.
As of today, May 14, I have a list of 14 people going to the rally.

Plan to leave here dark-thirty on June 5 for Chain Gang "Hoot in the Holler" in Durbin, WV (June 6-9), then head for Nashville via Scottsville, KY (Allen Co Historical Society - Mon. mid-day?), and Sumner Co Historical Society (Gallatin, TN - Tues?).  Hope to hit the TN State Archives in Nashville Wednesday AM, before picking up wife at airport at 2:15PM and then on to the rally later that afternoon.  Will bail the rally on Sunday AM and take the slab most of the way back.  If we can leave early enough, we might go the whole throw all at once, if all is good and can sneak into TX under the cool of darkness - but more likely pick a hotel 200 - 300 miles from Houston and finish up on Monday AM.

So definitely some genealogy stuff going on pre-rally.  Will be on the 2000 K1200LT+Hannigan double-wide sidecar rig, and have a LARGE Eureka Tetragon tent (10'x10'?) for the rally ground camping (gotta keep wife happy).  So please leave a campsite near the "entrance/roadway" to our allotted camping area, as I will be unable to maneuver the sidecar rig in between tents to get in and out....

Already committed to riding the "rally charity" kids around in a sidecar (probably PM) Thursday.  Last time we were in the area on bikes (RA Rally years ago) there was an old restaurant in Bell Buckle, TN (about 56 miles from rally) called the Bell Buckle Cafe.  A bit far for a dinner ride, perhaps... but worthy of a stop if you're nearby - especially since the RC-Moonpie Festival will be going on on Saturday.... can't make this stuff up!

Jerry,

I'm stil 50/50. Hoping to go but depends whose hair is on fire at work. If I go, it will likely be a speed run up and back.

Jerry, I'm definitely in for heading up there with a group.  I am still unsure about when I need to head home - currently I plan to leave Saturday midday so I can be home Sunday for some Father's Day time with my son.  However, this is also up in the air as of now, so I may be leaving Sunday with the group, as you mentioned - just not sure yet.  Thanks for the tip.
Who is going to the MOA Rally in June?? Respond here or send me an email. It might be helpful for everyone to know who else will be there and exchange cell phone numbers. We can meet up at the beer garden or you might need some assistance along the way.

I have also (finally) confirmed that we have 10 spots in the club camping area. I don't know where yet is but usually you just ask when you check in or ask one of the shuttle drivers to take you there.

We usually meet up for Friday night dinner as well. As we get closer and I have a list of people coming I will send the details of where and when.

Most people make their own way there or maybe ride with a few friends. We don't organize a club ride or anything. If you are looking for someone to ride with you can reply here or to John's previous post.

And if it is your first MOA Rally let me know. There is a lot to do and see and I (and others) can help you sort it out. Bring some spending money for farkles and gear and study the seminar schedule for interesting and informative presentations.

And note there is a discount if you register before May 31st.
