Club Ride to Hill Country Hangout – Kerrville

Friday – Sunday, April 6-8, 2018

The San Antonio BMW Club is again hosting a rally near Kerrville, and the Houston BMW Club will organize a Friday-Sunday group ride to attend. Some of us did this one last year, and it was great fun. We will leave Friday morning from Katy and return Sunday afternoon. On Saturday you can follow a guided ride to the Three Sisters area with our Club, ride suggested routes by the San Antonio BMW Cub, or just hang out. The rally is at Kerrville-Schreiner Park near Kerrville. You are responsible for your own accommodations (camping or motel).

For maps, GPX file and ride details, RSVP below

Visit the event website at http://www.sabmwra.org/html/2018_rally.html for registration and camping details.

To Register for the Ride

  • The ride is open to the public; members of the BMW Motorcycle Club of Houston receive priority.
  • Click to RSVP  to receive full ride information and updates. (We use Meetup.com to manage our rides. There is no cost to join.)
  • There may be a waiting list. If your plans change, please cancel your reservation so someone can take your place.

Meeting Reminder for Thursday, Feb 8, 2018

The meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday, February 8, 2018, at the Spaghetti Western Italian Cafe, 1608 Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77007. Come early if you would like to have dinner and socialize!

After our regular club business I will provide an update on the Hurricane Harvey donation of $700 from the Baton Rouge BMW dealership and riding club. If you recall, I sent an email requesting nominations for the donations (including a matching club donation). I delivered those donations last Sunday and will talk about them.

Then we will have our feature presentation!  It will be about a group of friends from Houston who decided to go on an adventure ride in Ecuador. An incredible and unforgettable adventure as the group experienced obstacles, hardships, thrills, and joy while falling in love with the spectacular land of unmolested nature and its beautiful people.

Our presenter, Mark Shim, will also talk about another adventure: “A Pikes Peak International Hillclimb Champion and record-setter passed away, so friends and family paid tribute by putting a team together to race the late champion’s bike on his beloved mountain, and to say the final goodbye.”

Finally, we need to renew our charter to the BMW Riders Association (BMWRA). We need to include at least 3 club members who are members of the RA. Please reply with your name and RA member number. We need to support them.

I hope you can join us!

Jerry Matson
President
BMW Motorcycle Club Of Houston

PS. If you missed our meeting last month our presenter, Moses Mai, created a video just for our club. Here is a link to his video, “1Day2Day: Moscow to Azerbaijan“, and also a link to his ride report on ADVrider.com, “1Day2Day European Marathon 2017” (Caution: long and addicting read! 34 pages and 665 posts!)

@Moses: Very sorry to hear of your grandfather’s passing.

RESCHEDULED: Club Ride — Use It or Lose It Redux – SUNDAY, January 28, 2018

This is a reprise of the ride that we tested out on Friday, Dec. 29. Hopefully no unpaved surprises left. Please arrive no later than 8:45 AM, so we can leave promptly at 9:00 AM. Lunch is at 1st Class BBQ in Hempstead. It’s new, and there is still a little confusion online about the location. We confirmed that it’s on the west side of Hwy 6, just south of 290. The GPX file is available for download here: https://goo.gl/DgGPxc. I would appreciate a few volunteer navigators. Please email RideMeister <ridemeister@bmwclubofhouston.com> if you want to help. … Read more ›

NOTE MEETING CHANGE!! Meeting Reminder for Thursday, Jan 18, 2018

Our next monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2018, at the Spaghetti Western Italian Cafe, 1608 Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77007.

NOTE: This is the THIRD Thursday of the month – NEXT WEEK!!! If you don’t recall, our normal meeting time on the second Thursday is taken by the Houston Marathon Club getting ready for the Houston Marathon on Sunday, Jan 14. We do this as a favor to the restaurant since they take care of us so well the rest of the year.

The program for the meeting will be:

  • Moses Mai presentation – “1Day2Day European Marathon 2017 Run”
  • Officer reports and future ride plans
  • 2018 Club plans and activity updates

Come in for a night of adventure and suspense as Moses Mai details his harrowing trip across Kazakhstan, Caucuses, and the Balkans. Hear tales of biblical flooding and bombogenesis extreme cold as he and his niece (Lala) traverse the Silk Road route across the Black Sea, battling drug smugglers and pirates, all while delivering a baby as they cross the Alps to civilization. An unbelievable modern day Tom Sawyer/ Huckleberry Finn pilgrimage that can’t be missed!

This will be about the second half of his trip, and he is bringing his drone for show and tell.

The formal meeting time is 7 pm but most people come around 6 for dinner and social time. Hope you can make it!

The outgoing route is nominally 120 miles, but I purposely included some back roads that I haven’t been on before, so there are three detours in the GPX file, in case we run into some unexpected unpaved roads. Lunch is at 1st Class BBQ in Hempstead. Lots of five-star reviews on Yelp …  Read more ›
